Word of the Lord to Abraham
Genesis 15:1 'After these things the word of the LORD came unto Abram in a vision, saying, Fear not, Abram: I am thy shield, and thy exceeding great reward.'
Here the word of the Lord came to Abram in a vision. When we read the incidents that happened in the previous chapter, we can understand Abram was perplexed. In
order to guide and console him, the word of the Lord came to Abram. The word of the Lord occurs 245 times in the old testament, 13 times in the new testament. In the
book of Genesis it occurs twice and 112 times in the books of Ezekiel and Jeremiah. The Lord intended to lead Abram in a different way. Usually the word of the Lord
is revealed to take us to the next level and encourage when we are stuck in a confused state. Even in our lives, when we are filled with questions and doubts, the
word of the Lord will be revealed at the due time. The word of the Lord will enable his children to take right decisions at the right time. The word of the Lord
will descend and it will shed light on our suspicions and distrusts. Today, let us meditate on how the word of the Lord performed in the life of Abraham.
Greak reward
Genesis 15:1 'After these things the word of the LORD came unto Abram in a vision, saying, Fear not, Abram: I am thy shield, and thy exceeding great reward.'
As recorded in the above verse, 'After these things' refers to the incidents that happened in chapter fourteen. We read in Genesis 14:12 'And they took Lot,
Abram's brother's son, who dwelt in Sodom, and his goods, and departed.' We see Lot and his belongings were taken as captives and then he was brought back by
Abraham. These incidents might have worried Abraham and he kept it iniside him. This was the time when the word of the Lord came to Abraham. The Lord said do not
be afraid, i will be like a shield to you and your exceeding great reward. The word of the Lord promises and motivates Abraham saying he will be given a great
reward. In chapter fourteen, Abraham seeing his nephew Lot being in danger and this might have been worried about his own future. The Lord sneds his word very
clearly saying 'Do not be afraid' to console him.
We read in Genesis 13:10 'And Lot lifted up his eyes, and beheld all the plain of Jordan, that it was well watered every where, before the LORD destroyed Sodom and
Gomorrah, even as the garden of the LORD, like the land of Egypt, as thou comest unto Zoar.' In these passages, we see two different lives, the life of Lot and the
life of Abraham. One hand Abraham who gained an exceeding reward and other hand Lot who lost his possessions. We see Lot believed what he saw with his own eyes whereas
Abraham believed on the promises of the Lord. Lot saw the prosperity of the land and he was led by his self-lust. He wanted an instant gratification. Since the Lord
were like a shield to Abraham, he received all the blessings of the Lord. But Lot incurrs heavy losses as he worked in the flesh. In Genesis 13:6 'so that they could
not dwell together.' Though they were blessed equally, they could not stay together. We the children of God should be the ones who multiplies our blessings. We should
pray that God should give us exceedingly great rewards. As recorded in Genesis 15:6 'And he believed in the LORD; and he counted it to him for righteousness.' We
the children of God should believe in the word of the Lord to receive great rewards.
Revelation
Genesis 15:2-4 'And Abram said, Lord GOD, what wilt thou give me, seeing I go childless, and the steward of my house is this Eliezer of Damascus? And Abram said,
Behold, to me thou hast given no seed: and, lo, one born in my house is mine heir. And, behold, the word of the LORD came unto him, saying, This shall not be thine
heir; but he that shall come forth out of thine own bowels shall be thine heir.'
In this place we see Abraham talks about Eliezer to the Lord. Although Abraham talks about his childless state, he mentions Eliezer of Damascus. The reason why
Abraham mentions Eliezer is because he thought he could be his successor. We see Abraham gives an alternate decision to the Lord as the promise he received in
Genesis 12:2 were not fulfilled. This is where the word of the Lord comes directly to Abraham and clarfies that it is not Eliezer but one who comes from his own
body will be his heir. The Lord clearly reveals and confirms his promise. The Lord rejects the plan of Abraham and fulfills his own plan. The word of the Lord
came to Abraham to fulfil the promise of the Lord. The word of the Lord guides Abraham not to take wrong decisions. The culture of Mesapotamia had impacted Abraham
were they had a culture where they adopt their servants as their male heir. This was the main reason why the word of the Lord immediately descends and addresses
this issue. The Lord reveals his divine plan and stops Abraham to take carnal decisions. The Lord has prepared an exclusive plan for his children and that can
never change. Let us not take hasty decisions in our lives and we must depend upon the words of the Lord.
Countless blessings
Genesis 15:5 'And he brought him forth abroad, and said, Look now toward heaven, and tell the stars, if thou be able to number them: and he said unto him, So
shall thy seed be.'
Here the Lord takes Abraham outside and shows how his blessings will turn out to be. The Lord promises countless blessings to Abraham. Before Abraham to receive this
blessing, the Lord takes him outside and asked him to look toward heaven. In order to understand the greatness of his blessings, the Lord takes him outside. There
are few things in our lives that are covering our eyes not to see the blessings of the Lord. We the children of the Lord will be blessed in great way as Abraham. The
clouds that are hiding the stars are not permanent. We read in Genesis 15:2 'And Abram said, Lord GOD, what wilt thou give me, seeing I go childless, and the steward
of my house is this Eliezer of Damascus?' We see Abraham question in verse two ha sbeen answere in verse five where God asked him to count the blessings if he were
able to number them and showed him countless blessings. The greatness of the blessing of the Lord could not be known when we are 'inside', we need to come 'outside'
to inherit them. Even in our lives, the word of the Lord will announce the countless blessings as Abraham was blessed. Amen.
