SUNDAY SERMONS

The Lord Almighty-12

Introduction

Genesis 17:19 “And God said, Sarah thy wife shall bear thee a son indeed; and thou shalt call his name Isaac: and I will establish my covenant with him for an everlasting covenant, and with his seed after him.

Over here in this passage, we see the Lord God speaks with Abraham. The Lord almighty promises Abraham that he will be blessed like never before. Even in our lives the Lord Almighty is ready to perform a lot of miracles for us. When we are stuck up in a hopeless situation, the Lord almighty will pitch in and will perform mighty miracles for us.

I Reveals the power of resurrection

Genesis 16:16 “And Abram was fourscore and six years old, when Hagar bare Ishmael to Abram.

We see Abraham was eighty six year old when he was blessed with Ishmael. The promise of the Lord almighty fulfils in chapter 17. Interestingly, the time gap between these two incidents is thirteen years. Abraham and Sarah waited for so long time and they were in a hopeless situation. But the Lord almighty makes a covenant with them to bless them abundantly. Even in our lives, we need to believe that the Lord almighty will begin new chapters in our lives though we are in a desperate situation. In Genesis 17:12 ‘And he that is eight days old shall be circumcised among you, every man child in your generations, he that is born in the house, or bought with money of any stranger, which is not of thy seed.’ We read about the covenant on circumcision. In the Old Testament the act of circumcision is given due diligence. But in the New Testament we read in Colossians 2:11 ‘In whom also ye are circumcised with the circumcision made without hands, in putting off the body of the sins of the flesh by the circumcision of Christ:’ The real circumcision is when we get rid of the sinful life and live a spiritual life. Same way even in our lives, we will be blessed abundantly as the Lord almighty will reveal his power of resurrection.

II Prepares for a miracle

Genesis 17:5,15 “Neither shall thy name any more be called Abram, but thy name shall be Abraham; for a father of many nations have I made thee. And God said unto Abraham, As for Sarai thy wife, thou shalt not call her name Sarai, but Sarah shall her name be.

The word Abraham would refer to the Father of a multitude. Truly speaking, Abraham was like a father of a mass crowd. The word Sarai would mean a quarrelling woman. But the Lord changes her name as Sarah which means a queen of a crowd. The Lord almighty changes her rebellious behavior and makes her a nice woman. The Lord prepares many blessings for Abraham and Sarah. Initially, they were worshipping idols but the Lord made them a King and queen. As Abraham inherited his blessings in chapter 17, so are we the children of God will inherit what God has in store for us. The blessing of Abraham also blessed his generations. Same way let us all pray to God that he should bless us with the blessing of generations. Amen.
