You Will Be A Blessing (10-Feb-2013)

"You Will Be A Blessing" or "The Journey of Abraham"

Today we are going to meditate on the verse from Genesis 12:2, 3 again.  As always people say this is not just another ‘blessing message’ but it is a message which teaches us the steps to take in order to receive the entire blessing of God.  We are going to analyse the journey of Abraham of how he faced the obstacles on the way and how he overcame all those and received the massive blessing towards the end.  So the title of the message can also be renamed as “The Journey of Abraham”.

Today we are going to analyse the dos and don’ts in the journey of Abraham thereby applying the right ways in our lives, correcting ourselves and bring ourselves into the centre of God’s Will to receive the ultimate blessings of God.

1.       ABRAHAM WHO WAS LED BY GOD

So Abram departed as the Lord had spoken to him, and Lot went with him. And Abram was seventy-five years old when he departed from Haran.

Genesis 12:4

As we see here, God instructed Abraham to move from his native place to a foreign land and he did so according to what God spoke to him.  He did not consult anyone before he could proceed for the journey when he received the command from God.  Thus the superior quality of Abraham is his obedience and this is the secret of God’s blessings to be fulfilled in one’s life.  To get onto the top of the ladder one needs to take the first step.  Abraham was at the age of 75, an age which he must have some sort of disabilities physically. Nevertheless he obeyed and so he was led by God.

So if we do something impossible what asks us to do then that will be the greatest obedience.  Perhaps we might be in the same situation with inability to do certain things, very fragile and weak.  But when we obey God’s words, then He will stretch out his arms to help us.  Then there will certainly be a difference seen with the way we walked alone and with the way God is leading.

So let us be led by God like Abraham!

2.       ABRAHAM WHO CHOSE OWN WILL (SELF WILL)

Then Abram took Sarai his wife and Lot his brother’s son, and all their possessions that they had gathered, and the people whom they had acquired in Haran, and they departed to go to the land of Canaan. So they came to the land of Canaan.

Genesis 12:5

Abraham started his journey on a happier note but who he included with along his journey mattered the most to God.  God called Abraham alone but he outsmarted Him by taking Lot with him.  He did not consult with God perhaps because he would have moved out of compassion to leave Lot alone.  But Lot was not in the plan of God and so there arose heated arguments between his herdsmen and of Abraham’s along the way.

And there was strife between the herdsmen of Abram’s livestock and the herdsmen of Lot’s livestock. The Canaanites and the Perizzites then dwelt in the land.

Genesis 13:7

Then Lot chose for himself all the plain of Jordan, and Lot journeyed east. And they separated from each other.

Genesis 13:11

So when we do things against God’s Will, we will end up in tears, sorrow and unwanted arguments.  Even the little peace will wither away when we involve ourselves in unwanted relationships and also with our unwillingness to lead a separated life.

God wants us to be placed in the centre of His will and that is why our blessings get delayed at times.  Just like how God promised Abraham again when he got separated from Lot, He will also bless us when we separate ourselves from all unwanted things which He hates.

Let us do the Will of God alone in our lives!

3.         ABRAHAM WHO CHANGED HIS ROUTE

Now there was a famine in the land, and Abram went down to Egypt to dwell there, for the famine was severe in the land.

Genesis 12:10

Please say you are my sister, that it may be well with me for your sake, and that I may live because of you.”

Genesis 12:13

But the Lord plagued Pharaoh and his house with great plagues because of Sarai, Abram’s wife.

Genesis 12:17

There was famine in the land where Abraham stayed and so he went to Egypt.  He would have thought blessings in mind during his journey but there came famine.  So he took his own route without going on the path which God instructed.

Had Abraham went on God’s way he would not have pleaded and beseeched with his wife.  Therefore, if you turn your route against God’s will you will have to beg for your life.  God neither forsook Abraham nor will he forsake us when we move away from him.  He will wait for us to return to Him so that He may bless us.  So submit yourselves unto God.  He will set you right and make you receive the promises He has kept in store for you.

Let us walk in the right path of God!

4.         ABRAHAM AMIDST GOD’S WILL AGAIN

And the Lord said to Abram, after Lot had separated from him: “Lift your eyes now and look from the place where you are—northward, southward, eastward, and westward; for all the land which you see I give to you and your descendants forever.

Genesis 13:14, 15

Arise, walk in the land through its length and its width, for I give it to you.”

Genesis 13:17

After the separation of Lot, Abraham received a great promise from God again.  As said above, God had kept the blessings only for Abraham and so He was waiting for Lot’s dismiss.  God was taking all unwanted things away from Abraham’s life in order to bless him.  But Abraham was very much depressed about Lot’s going away which God disliked.

God also wants us to forget all the untoward situations happened in our past lives.  He says He is comforting us and is going to give us many new blessings.  For Abraham, Isaac rose to make him forget of Lot.  Even in our lives, many blessings are going to rise so that we will forget our past sorrows.  Our worries regarding the past are hindering our present blessings.  God wants us to come unto the centre of His will to bless us.

Let we be found in the centre of His will always!
